Macy’s to Close Three Long Island Locations

Macy’s has announced plans to close 66 stores nationwide, including three locations on Long Island, as part of a restructuring strategy aimed at addressing financial challenges.
The Long Island closures include Macy’s Backstage discount outlets at Lake Success Shopping Center in New Hyde Park and on Walt Whitman Road in Melville, along with the department store in the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. Notices of the impending closures were posted at these locations on Thursday evening.
While Macy’s has not yet provided specific closure dates for the Long Island stores, a list shared online indicated that most shutterings would occur during the first quarter of 2025.
“Closing any store is never easy,” said Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of Macy’s, Inc. “As part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are focusing resources on our go-forward stores, where customers are responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service.”
This decision aligns with a restructuring plan unveiled in February 2024, which outlines the closure of 150 underperforming stores over three years, leaving Macy’s with 350 active locations nationwide.
Elsewhere in New York, five Macy’s locations in New York City are set to close, including:
Macy’s Backstage Queens Place in Elmhurst
Macy’s Brooklyn Downtown
Macy’s Backstage Sheepshead Bay
Macy’s Staten Island Furniture and Mattress Gallery
Macy’s Backstage Fordham Place in the Bronx
Additionally, Macy’s at the Mall at Greece Ridge Center in Rochester will also be closing.
Despite these closures, Long Island still boasts several Macy’s locations, including full-line stores at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, Roosevelt Field in Uniondale, Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, South Shore Mall in Bay Shore, Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington, Northern Boulevard in Manhasset, and Hampton Bays Plaza. Macy’s Furniture and Mattress Galleries remain in Carle Place and Smith Haven Mall.
